AAO 2025 - Research on Archetype Analysis

The Glaucoma Poster Panel Discussion at the American Academy of Ophthalmology 2025 showcased research by Dalal Ahmidouch, one of our student researchers from the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. She presented on our topic: Archetype Analysis Reveals Limitations of MD-Based Classification of Functional Vision Loss From Glaucoma. The study showed that the mean deviation classification of glaucoma fails to account for functional patterns of vision loss.

AAO 2025 - Innovations in Teleophthalmology

At the American Academy of Ophthalmology 2025, Dr. Al-Aswad presented on the panel titled "Innovations in Teleophthalmology" alongside colleagues such as April Maa and Grayson Armstrong (pictured). She presented on our successful implementation and launch of the eyeSITE project where she led the initiative to put AI enabled fundus cameras on 20 of Penn Medicine's primary care offices to screen for diabetic retinopathy.

Hear From Our Innovation Fellow

As an Innovation Fellow in the OPTIC Lab at Penn Medicine, I recently had the privilege of attending the American Academy of Ophthalmology Conference. I attended cutting-edge lectures and symposiums focused on innovation and teleophthalmology, which offered me the opportunity to engage with industry leaders and experts, exchanging insights on the latest trends in the field. I also gained hands-on experience with advanced ophthalmic devices, further expanding my knowledge and skills.

In addition, I joined several meetings for our ongoing projects and collaborations. This experience was both inspiring and invaluable, reinforcing my dedication to innovation in eye care.

American Academy of Ophthalmology Annual Meeting 2024

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting was hosted in Chicago this past weekend. Dr. Lama Al-Aswad presented in the Innovations in Teleophthalmology session, addressing the burden of eye disease and highlighting new datasets that can train machine learning systems for face-related tasks. She also had a symposium on Patient Education and Implementation in Artifical Intelligence, where she discussed in depth about one of her many specialties within ophthalmology.
