Scheie in MOTION Mobile Eye Unit

Scheie Eye Institute in MOTION (Mobile Ocular Testing in our Neighborhoods) is a community outreach initiative led by the Department of Ophthalmology, advancing both our clinical and educational missions while expanding access to eye care. This program was made possible by generous gifts from Rick Campbell and family, the Save Vision Foundation, and Envision Health Technologies.

The mobile unit is equipped with state‑of‑the‑art diagnostic and screening technology designed to detect the four major causes of blindness: glaucoma, cataracts, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy. During mobile unit events, community members can walk up without an appointment to receive a free screening and obtain an immediate diagnosis through a teleophthalmology consultation at no cost. Individuals with a new or previously undiagnosed eye condition can follow up with providers in their community or a provider through Penn Ophthalmology.

This innovative community health model helps address critical gaps in eye care access in Philadelphia. Dr. Al-Aswad's previous deployment of a mobile eye unit in New York City demonstrated success in reaching individuals who had not received an eye exam in two or more years and in early detection of blinding eye disease to prevent vision loss.
